PROFESSIONAL FAQS: WHAT ARE COMPLICATIONS OF FOLLICULITIS?

Expert opinion from Marcelle Freire

Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicle. It is usually caused by bacteria and is characterized by lesions in the form of pus blisters that compromise the hair root. They usually have a benign course, but they can evolve with recurrent infections or even cause irreversible damage to the skin, such as scars, hair destruction and areas of permanent hair loss. In more severe cases, folliculitis can be a gateway to deeper skin infections, causing abscesses or cellulitis.
