Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged superficial veins, which most commonly affect veins in the legs. They are harmless, though painful and disfiguring. When they are inflamed, they become tender to touch and hinder circulation and cause swollen ankles, itchy skin and pain. In varicose veins the valves in the veins do not allow the flow of blood back to heat and allow blood to pool in the vein, increase pressure and congestion, leading from the vein to bulge and twist. Superficial veins have less muscle that support compare to deep veins, hence varicose is more common in the superficial veins. Any condition that puts excessive pressure on the legs or abdomen like obesity, pregnancy or standing for long hours, large abdominal tumors cause varicose veins. If varicose veins are left untreated, they can cause ulcers, deep vein thrombosis or thrombophlebitis and sometimes superficial veins burst and bleed.

If varicose veins are not treated on time, there will be a continuous accumulation of blood which will cause damage to the walls of the veins. After few times, the veins will be ruptured, and blood will come outside the vessels. It leads to swelling, rashes, infections. Stagnant blood may cause ulcers too.
