Many women will keep a little black dress in their wardrobe, a fashion staple to whip out on special occasions.
But it seems LBDs are being replaced with a more daring sheer black dress on the red carpet this season.
A-listers and homegrown stars have all opted for the look, from Kendall Jenner to Katy Perry and Ice Spice.
The look - more festival fashion than classic red carpet - often sees stars baring their underwear in a see through dress.
On Sunday, Sheridan Smith turned heads at the Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall.
The actress, 42, whose musical Opening Night was recently cancelled two months early, wore a sheer black dress by Rebecca Vallance as she posed outside the famous concert hall.
Her dress reached right down to the ground and was adorned with shimmering rhinestones.
She wore a pair of black heels to add a few inches to her stature and accessorised with a glamorous costume necklace and earrings for the evening.
Stage and screen star Sheridan stopped to greet fans and have her picture taken with them on arrival.
She carried a mirrored silver clutch purse shaped like a pair of lips with her.
Meanwhile, earlier this month Katy Perry left little to the imagination as she hit the red carpet at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The pop star, 39, looked ready for Coachella as she put on a very daring display in a sparkly fishnet dress, which left her black underwear on full display and allowed a glimpse of her incredible figure.
The sides of the sultry black number were left completely open and only secured with red velvet ribbons, showing off her long legs.
Katy could not resist spinning around on the carpet while posing up a storm, to show off her revealing outfit from all angles.
The singer boosted her height with a pair of heeled black knee-high boots and added a pair of futuristic sunglasses.
Showing sheer can also be glammed up, Kendall Jenner made a splash in a see-through dress as she arrived at the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscars Party red carpet last month.
The 28-year-old model and reality star showcased her eye-catching figure in a Maison Margiela dress that debuted at the fashion house's spring/summer 2024 couture show.
The looked emphasised her stunningly slim waist, while also revealing the corset she used to achieve the look, as well as her white thong.
Kendall's look featured layers of floral lace designs over her chest, which transitioned into a new section covering her midriff that was decorated with lighter-colored lace in the shape of fan-like ginkgo leaves.
The dress featured a more reserved sheer black skirt that draped down to the ground while still revealing the 5ft11in beauty's long, fit legs.
She elevated her already impressive stature with black open-toe heels that strapped just below her ankles in a criss-crossing pattern.
The dress left the catwalk star's fit arms exposed, and it also revealed her white thong, despite having folds of dark material covering her crotch area.
Also rocking a sheer look at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party was Ice Spice.
The rapper, 24, posed up a storm on the red carpet as she showcased her incredible curves in a black gown with lace detailing by Dolce & Gabbana.
Her sultry gown was completely see-through, allowing a glimpse of her sensational figure and black bra and thong underneath.
Ice Spice, born Isis Naija Gasto, played up to the cameras by turning to show her perky bottom and pushing up her cleavage.
She completed her striking look with her signature bright orange hair, straightened and slicked to the side.
Another look from the Vanity Fair Oscar party was worn by actress Charlize Theron, 48, who looked incredible in the backless number which was embellished in design and revealed her black underwear underneath.
She wore her blonde hair in a slick up-do as she posed with her hands on her hips at the star-studded party held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.
The number had a frilled peplum design and she completed her look with a chunky gold necklace.
It was Charlize's second outfit of the night as she also wore a slinky silver number at the Oscars themselves.
