Masik Shivratri May 2024: Significance 

Since Lord Shiva took on the shape of a Linga during Masik Shivratri, the festival is considered extremely auspicious. Masik Shivratri is a religious holiday since it is believed that fasting on this day grants one better life and success in all future undertakings. It is believed that by praying and performing penance on this day, one can accomplish seemingly impossible undertakings. While married women fast for the health and happiness of their spouse and son, single women fast for their ideal husbands. The significance of the day lies in the fact that fasting on this day guides one's soul towards Moksha, or liberation.

Masik Shivratri 2024: Rituals To Follow On This Sacred Day 

- Devotees must take an early morning bath in the morning to perform the puja. 

- The "Abhishek" of the Lord Shiva or Lingam idol involves the use of Gangajal, turmeric powder, rose water, milk, curds, ghee, honey, vermillion, and "Bel" leaves.

- Some worshippers give the deity's idols flowers, sprinkle vermillion, and apply sandalwood paste on them.

- Lord Shiva is worshipped by reciting hymns and performing aarti.

- A homemade prasad offering is put up on the altar.

- Puja should ideally begin at midnight and be completed by the next morning when devotees fast all day.

- Jagran, or night watch, is observed while kirtans and bhajans uplift the atmosphere.

In addition, devotees of Lord Shiva also honour Goddesses Parvati, Saraswati, and Lakshmi.
