Mother's Day 2024 History

Mother's Day is observed on the second Sunday of May each year. In 1908, Anna Jarvis hosted a memorial ceremony for her mother at the St. Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. When her mother died in 1905, she launched a campaign to get Mother's Day recognised as a national holiday in the United States.

Her proposal was initially denied; nevertheless, six years later, in 1911, the United States began recognising Mother's Day as a holiday. In 1941, Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the second Sunday of May as a national holiday to commemorate mothers.
