NCERT'S REVISED ENGLISH TEXTBOOK FOR CLASS 6 HIGHLIGHTS INDIAN CULTURE AND AUTHORS

NCERT New Syllabus: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) recently issued a new English language textbook for class 6, 'Poorvi'. While the previous book mainly included stories by non-Indian authors, the new textbook has nine prose works by Indian authors set in Indian locations, as well as five poetry by non-Indian authors, according to the Indian Express.

Most chapters have been rewritten and embedded in an Indian context, by the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 and the new National Education Policy 2020. The old NCERT English language textbook "Honeysuckle" had eight poems (seven by non-Indian authors) and eight prose pieces (five by non-Indian authors). According to the news agency, it also included the stories 'Fair Play' by Munshi Premchand and 'Banyan Tree' by Ruskin Bond.

Also, the term 'Bharat' was used for the first time in an NCERT textbook. The word appears 19 times in the chapter labelled "Culture and Tradition," with India cited seven times, according to the report. The chapter also includes an area headed 'Hamara Bharat, Incredible India!', which starts with a seven-sentence phrase referring to India solely as 'Bharat'.

“Bharat has been known worldwide as a land of wise and heroic individuals…All these elements ensure that Bharat prospers and is respected globally,” reads the chapter.

Aside from this, the textbook includes a chapter on the usage of spices outside of cooking, as well as a chapter on yoga and its benefits, according to the report.

The NCERT previously stated that new textbooks for grades 3 and 6 will be released in April and May, however, this has been delayed. Class 3 textbooks are already accessible on the market. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has already mandated all affiliated institutions to implement the revised syllabus and materials for classes 3 and 6 beginning with the 2024-25 academic year.

“Consequently, schools are advised to follow these new syllabi and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 in place of textbooks published by NCERT till the year 2023,” Joseph Emmanuel, Director (Academics), CBSE told PTI.
