The purpose of Pradosh Vrat is to worship Lord Shiva. Several things are believed to have emerged during Samudra Manthan, when the devas and asuras churned the ocean in search of the Amrit. Poison, or halahala, was the first item to emerge from the water and a menace to the entire planet. To rescue all living things on Earth, Lord Shiva decided to consume the Halahala visha. The day he consumed the poison came to be known as Pradosh's day.
