Things you should never Google

As the saying goes, curiosity killed the cat. Sometimes it's better to stay ignorant about certain things. Things that do not really bring anything good to our lives, other than disgust, confusion, and maybe even paranoia. It used to be a lot easier. All you had to do was avoid a topic. If need be, you just wouldn't watch TV or read the newspaper for a bit. But everything changed in the digital age. Most information is just a click away, which is both a blessing—and a curse. While search engines such as Google make our lives easier, they can also present us with search results for questions we shouldn't even be asking. In this gallery you'll find a list of things you should never, ever search on Google. We know how hard it is to resist, but trust us on this one. While these Google searches will not kill you, they'll potentially disturb you, make you sick, and even get you arrested. You've been warned.

These Insanely Helpful Garden Plants Keep the Mosquitoes Away

Say goodbye to the outdoor pests. Bugs come with the territory when you’re outdoors, but some are more tolerable than others. If it feels like mosquitoes are invading your yard, it’s understandable to want to do what you can to get rid of them. Enter mosquito repellent plants. Here’s the thing: Experts say that the best way to keep mosquitoes at bay is to use personal repellents recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But if you want to go a more natural route, you may be interested in selecting certain plants—they’re just not necessarily guaranteed to work as well as a spray. “The idea that planting certain plants around your home will successfully repel mosquitoes is only supported by anecdotal evidence and not empirical evidence,” says Eva Buckner, Ph.D., assistant professor and state extension specialist at the University of Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory. It’s important to note, though, that there is some evidence that certain plants may help discourage certain mosquitoes from setting up camp in your yard—they just don’t work as well as a chemical or spray. If it feels like your outdoor space is a haven to mosquitoes, it’s a good idea to “eliminate mosquito breeding grounds on and around your property by draining standing water from flowerpots, birdbaths, grill covers, baby pools, and other sources,” says Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., board-certified entomologist and senior vice president of public affairs at the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). Using a small fan outside may also help keep mosquitoes away since “they are not strong flyers,” Fredericks says. But if you like the look and smell of certain plants and want to see if they keep the mosquitoes away, too, there’s no reason not to try them. These are the plants fans swear are most likely to help get rid of mosquitoes. Snap up one or a few to enhance your outdoor space.

Bizarre parenting tips from the 19th century

The way we raise our children has changed considerably throughout the years. Although some principles do still apply, many have been proven not to be as effective. While parents in the 19th century did have access to books that would guide them in their parenting journey, and some did actually have good tips, many of these books were just plain bizarre. Indeed, when was the last time you "aired" your baby in a cage outside your window, or gave your child some opium, really? Click through the following gallery and get to know more crazy parenting tips from the 1800s.

Gargoyles and other grotesques in architecture

Derived from the Old French gargouille, meaning "throat," the term gargoyle was first used to describe carved lions and spouts on ancient classical buildings. Gargoyles were designed to carry rainwater away from a building to protect the masonry from water damage. Today, a gargoyle's function remains exactly that. Chimera or grotesques, on the other hand, are ornamental-only sculptures. What they have in common, though, is that these Gothic-era effigies represent some of the ugliest and most bizarrely formed works of art ever created. Indeed, a few are truly disturbing in their appearance. They are typically found on the facades of churches and cathedrals, but can also be admired—or disliked—on the walls of universities, clock towers, and other civic buildings. So, where in the world can you see the wackiest, weirdest, and most alarming examples of this often devilish artform? Click through and come face to face with some mystical and sometimes sinister-looking sculptures.
